The key role of fisheries to preserve our marine biodiversity
Monday October 17th 2016, during the “Code of Practice for Captains Training programme”, Sopheia Edghill, Marine Conservation Officer for WWF Guyana presented on “Managing the interaction with Endangered, Threatened and Protected (ETP) Species within the Guyana Seabob Trawl Fisheries".
During the discussion and workshop that followed, emphasis was given to the code of conduct for fisheries which also includes a special focus on how to preserve ETP species, such as Marine Turtles. WWF’s discussion especially focused on the use of Turtle Excluder Device (TED) and Bycatch Reduction Device (BRD) which are mandatory.
TEDs are used to minimize the impact on the endangered turtle populations and other larger species like sharks and rays.
In addition to this, the captains were informed about the onboard observer data collection strategy on ETP species, currently ongoing.
This practice was part of WWF-Guianas broader set of actions, trainings, scoping studies to promote and sustain the conservation of Oceans and their wildlife.
