Marine Turtles have been exploring the earth for at least a hundred million years…but now most of them are on the brink of extinction. That is why WWF Guianas asks for special attention for these ancient animals. On 22nd May –Marine Biodiversity Day- WWF Guianas starts with a special internet game and every one can join! Click here, to read more about the game.

Why the Guianas are special for sea turtles

There are seven Marine Turtle species worldwide, and four of these nestle on the beaches of the Guianas. These four species (the Aitkanti orLeatherback, the Krapé or Green, the Warana and the Karet) are all of conservation concern:  their global populations continue to systematically decline because of human interference. As you may imagine, the relatively undisturbed beaches of the Guianas are very important to the survival  of these ancient animals.

Follow your favorite turtle!

WWF Guianas has been following turtles via satellite transmitters since 2005, and more recently in 2010 and 2011. A lot of interesting data has been collected, with this year’s research hopefully confirming much of what has been discovered in the previous years.

Play the internet game!
Monitoring turtle movements around the planet is an amazing journey. We want to share that experience with you. So, from the 22nd of May 2012, you can follow our very special selection of turtles from the Guianas via this website and predict which turtle will be the first to cross the finish lines that we have drawn.
