“Third Biological Assessment Team Survey uncovers rich biodiversity of the Upper Berbice region – Area never before studied by biologists.”

Guyana’s biological diversity continues to astound even the most seasoned scientists. WWF Guianas and Global Wildlife Conservation’s latest expedition in Guyana, documented in our latest Biodiversity Assessment Team (BAT) survey publication launched in July 2018, tells the story of pristine forests and abundant wildlife of the Upper Berbice Region. In fact, the forests of the Upper Berbice have been described as among the most pristine in Guyana or the neotropics, more generally. The forests support scores of magnificent wildlife species including South Americas’ giants: Jaguar, Anteater, Black Caiman. Many species were documented for the first time in Guyana, with several likely new to science. However, with the extractive sector’s interest in the region and some already visible impacts, it is important to ensure that the integrity of ecosystems is not compromised.
