EARTH HOUR GUYANA

Earth Hour activities and events will be observed on World Water Day - March 22, 2025.

Guyana, known as the "Land of Many Waters," has a rich history deeply connected to its abundant water resources. This year, Earth Hour in will focus on ‘THE JOURNEY OF WATER,’ to raise awareness about the importance of freshwater resources and the need to safeguard them, by calling on Guyanese to 'WATCH OVER WATER'.

Earth Hour aims to reconnect people with the natural sources of their water and encourage sustainable water use practices.Uniting individuals, organizations, and government bodies in a collective effort to ensure the continued safeguarding of rivers, lakes, and wetlands that serve as lifelines for biodiversity, culture, and local economies.

At the Water Village, you’ll find a variety of engaging activities and attractions for all ages. Capture Earth Hour memories at our eco photo booth, and immerse yourself in the virtual reality river experience that takes you on a virtual journey through stunning waterways. Don’t miss the captivating art installations that highlight the beauty and significance of water in our lives

The Journey of Water Challenge is an exciting scavenger hunt designed to test your knowledge about the freshwater resources of Guyana. This challenge will take participants on a journey along some of Guyana's most significant rivers, lakes and wetlands. Teams who complete the scavenger hunt will receive prizes.

  • Demerara River: Learn about the river's significance to Georgetown and its role in trade and transportation.
  • Essequibo River: Discover the largest river in Guyana and its diverse wildlife and plant species.
  • Berbice River: Explore the historical importance of this river and its contribution to agriculture.
  • Potaro River: Visit the majestic Kaieteur Falls and understand the river's impact on tourism and local communities.
  • Cuyuni River: Uncover the river's role in gold mining and its environmental challenges.

COUNTDOWN LIGHTS OFF CONCERT

As we gather under the night sky, counting down to the big lights off moment, we will hear the wonderful voices and sounds of local singers, dances and poetry, with brief statements and presentations from key organizations, telling a story about Guyana’s water systems from the highlands to our homes.

The Countdown to Lights Off show is designed under the theme of Journey of Water with each item connected to the next telling a story about Guyana’s water systems from the highlands to our homes and ocean. The show will feature a number of local singers, dances, and poetry, as well as brief statements and presentations from key organisations.

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in the lighting up of the Earth Hour Emblem and Map the Journey of Water through art.
