WWF-Guianas hosted the second working group session for the BIODEV 2030 Project in Suriname – Phase 2, focused on strengthening sustainable fisheries and biodiversity, with support from the national partners of the BIODEV project, the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries (LVV), and the Ministry of Oil, Gas and Environment (OGM).
Participants at this two-day session, held on August 26 and 27, discussed essential strategies for mainstreaming biodiversity into development initiatives, with a particular emphasis on sustainable fisheries.
This second working group session builds on the momentum created by the inception workshop held in November 2024 and the previous first working group session held in January 2025, followed by the industry current state assessment, during which interviews with various national stakeholders were conducted to update and gather information regarding the sector.
A key part of the session involved delivering important project updates and facilitating sector planning to refine and finalise the previously proposed policy reform briefs that can support sustainable fisheries while promoting positive biodiversity outcomes within the artisanal fisheries sector.
Several presentations were delivered by WWF-Guianas, the national partners, OSAEDA Ventures, and Mindshift Advisory, followed by group decisions that incorporated valuable input from sector stakeholders and further advanced the initiative.
As the Agence Française de Développement (AFD)- funded BIODEV 2030 Project progresses, the outcomes, experiences, and lessons learned through these working group sessions will assist in finalising the policy briefs, bringing us closer to transforming fisheries sustainably in Suriname.
