WWF-Guianas facilitated the Third National Dialogue for the BIODEV 2030 Project in Guyana – Phase 2, to discuss vital strategies for mainstreaming biodiversity into development initiatives, focusing particularly on sustainable fisheries.
This third dialogue builds upon the momentum created by two previous national dialogues under the BIODEV2030 Project, both of which laid critical groundwork for integrating biodiversity into national policy frameworks. Emphasis was placed on refining and finalizing previously proposed policy reforms that can support sustainable fisheries, while delivering positive biodiversity outcomes within the artisanal fisheries sector. Several key initiatives were highlighted, including a market analysis aimed at exploring alternative livelihoods and the development of a Blue Fish ecolabel to promote sustainable fishing practices.
Another essential aspect of the dialogue was the in-depth discussion on monitoring and data collection. Participants explored the potential of a user-friendly app designed for local fishers to record vital information, enhancing data availability. Training and capacity development also emerged as crucial components for fishers, equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to ensure the successful implementation of sustainable fishing practices.
Identifying and developing finance-ready nature-positive concepts was a significant focus of this dialogue. The implementation plans involved conducting workshops tailored for cooperatives, where participants could share insights and collaborated on potential initiatives. Following these workshops, a comprehensive report will be prepared, summarizing findings and guiding the development of nature-positive concepts
As the BIODEV 2030 Project progresses, the outcomes, experiences and lessons learned through the dialogues will help to inform discussions, while reinforcing the need for continuous engagement and partnership among all actors involved to model a sustainable future for Guyana's rich biodiversity and its people.
