The Steering Committee of the EU-funded Sustainable Forest Livelihoods (SFL) Programme convened for its third meeting in Guyana to assess the programme’s progress, challenges, and discuss strategies for future initiatives.
High on the agenda at the meeting was the announcement of the Grants Investment Mechanism, which is set to be launched in July 2025. This initiative aims to provide local forest-dependent communities with critical access to financial support through the SFL programme and has the potential to transform local initiatives and significantly improve the overall impact of the project.
Another key matter on the agenda was the status of the Value Chains Interventions of the SFL programme, where key achievements and next steps were highlighted. Significant progress was reported in the value chains, which include honey production, timber, agroforestry, and nature-based tourism.
Committee members expressed satisfaction at the level of work being implemented to ensure that the programme’s goals are met not just effectively, but with a lasting impact that resonates throughout the communities.
The Steering Committee consists of representatives from several organizations, including the Guyana Manufacturing Services Association, the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Forest Products Association, the Ministry of Finance, the Guyana Forestry Commission, the European Union, the Agence Française de Développement, and the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs.
