On 17 December 2024, a Stakeholder Information Session, which focused on nature-based tourism and was organised under the Sustainable Forest Livelihoods (SFL) programme, was held at Cara Lodge in Georgetown. This session brought together the major players and key stakeholders to discuss and strategize the future of nature-based tourism in Guyana.

The information session served as a way to inform future actions of the SFL programme, which seeks to aid the development of community-based nature tourism in Regions 2 and 10 by offering technical assistance from established groups in Region 9 alongside national experts and organisations.

During the session, participants were informed about the recent progress and specific elements of the SFL workplan related to nature-based tourism, followed by an analysis of past, ongoing, and future initiatives of the Tourism Committee of Region 10 and the Tourism Association of Region 2. Participants also identified the existing opportunities and pinpointed the gaps among regions and stakeholders that could support nature-based tourism, with the goal of improving the overall support system.

Present at the half-day session were high-ranking officials and key representatives from the Guyana Tourism Authority, the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana, the National Toshaos Council, and the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce.

This information session marks a significant step forward in promoting sustainable livelihoods through nature-based tourism, leveraging the collective expertise and resources of the involved stakeholders. The collaborative efforts initiated here are expected to help pave the way for improving sustainability in the tourism sector, which will benefit the environment and local communities in Guyana.
