Sectoral developments have created a proliferation of competing demands on the rich natural resources in Suriname. The lack of sound land use planning through an inclusive multi-stakeholder process makes it difficult to critically control and mitigate environmental and social impacts in the country. Suriname has still many steps to take to make optimal use of its land. In April 2014, WWF Guianas and the Ministry of Spatial Planning, Land and Forest management have initiated a study to suppport sound land use planning in Suriname. The results of this study were presented in a workshop to representatives of the government, university, NGOs and private sector on the 17th of March. Several guest speakers illustrated important tools for land use planning during the workshop, such as education, GIS, engagement and participatory mapping. Nearly 80 people participated in the workshop, which indicates a large interest in the topic
