Protected Areas Effective Management

WWF Guianas provides support towards the establishment of protected areas and the improved management of nature reserves throughout the Guianas, because these areas are especially dedicated to the protection and maintenance of biological diversity, and of natural and associated cultural resources.
The region possesses extensive protected areas systems created without a regional vision and unevenly distributed among the different countries. Suriname currently counts ten nature reserves, one national park and one multiple use management area, covering an area of 1,966,120 hectares.Guyana's protected area system currently encompasses one national park and one forest reserve for a total area of 602,000 hectares, while La Guyane protected areas system covers 406,022 hectares for seven nature reserves and one domanial biological reserve.
