The conservation of biodiversity through the creation and management of protected areas is a cornerstone of the WWF work worldwide. Protected areas safeguard places with exceptional biodiversity and natural value can contribute to sustainable income and support livelihoods.

In Suriname and Guyana efforts have to be made to achieve 17% protected areas by 2020, as both governments have pledged by signing the Convention of Biodiversity (CBD). French Guiana is leading the way with 45% of its surface earmarked as protected area.
